Definition: In maths, an array refers to a set of numbers or objects that will follow a specific pattern. An array is an orderly arrangement, often in rows, columns or a matrix. Arrays are used in multiplication and division as it shows a great visual to show how multiplication can be shown as repeated addition and division can be shown as fair shares.

Create an array with a partner using the materials from the class counting box and then answer these questions,

Describe how the items are arranged in an array. What counting pattern is shown by your array?

How can this pattern be used to find the total number of items in your array?

What is the total number of items in your array?

Write a multiplication sentence to go with your array. Describe how the columns and rows are used to find the parts of a multiplication sentence.

What type of problem can be solved using an array? Write a problem that could be solved using the array you made.

Write the multiplication equation for each of these arrays.
